Problem

cargo-component is a Cargo subcommand maintained by the Bytecode Alliance (github.com/bytecodealliance/cargo-component) that extends Rust’s cargo build tool to produce WebAssembly components targeting the WASM Component Model. It processes WIT (WebAssembly Interface Types) definitions, generates Rust language bindings via wit-bindgen, and produces .wasm component artifacts that conform to the Component Model binary format. It is the primary toolchain for building production WASM components in Rust. cargo component build is as natural to a Rust-targeting WASM developer as cargo build is to any other Rust developer — which means it inherits every supply chain risk that Cargo carries, and adds several new ones specific to the Component Model ecosystem.

The fundamental attack surface stems from Rust’s compile-time code execution model. Rust builds execute arbitrary native code through two mechanisms before a single byte of application code is compiled. First, build.rs scripts are Rust programs that are compiled and run prior to the main compilation step. They are unrestricted: a build.rs can open network sockets, read environment variables, write files, spawn processes, and modify the compilation environment. They run as the invoking user or, in CI, as the service account running the pipeline. Second, procedural macros (proc-macro crates) are shared libraries loaded directly into the Rust compiler process. They run as native code with the same privileges as rustc and have full access to the host filesystem and network. Both mechanisms execute during a routine cargo component build invocation, with no user prompt and no sandbox by default.

The WASM Component Model introduces supply chain links that do not exist in ordinary Rust builds. Building a WASM component with cargo-component requires: (a) cargo-component itself, fetched and built from crates.io or installed via cargo install; (b) WIT interface dependencies fetched from warg (WASM component registries) or from OCI registries; © wit-bindgen, the code generator that converts WIT interface definitions to Rust source, which itself has proc-macro-like code generation; (d) wasm-tools, used for WASM binary validation, transformation, and composition. Each link in this chain is an independent injection point. A compromised crate anywhere in the transitive dependency tree — including in cargo-component’s own dependencies — executes code on every machine that builds a WASM component.

The open source maintenance reality compounds the technical risk. As of May 2026, the cargo-component repository has no SECURITY.md file, no documented security contact, and no history of GHSA (GitHub Security Advisory) filings against the repository. The tool is in active development at 0.x versions, which means breaking changes, feature additions, and security fixes are released together in regular point releases without a stable release cadence or a documented security-fix-only backport policy. Review of the cargo-component changelog reveals several security-relevant changes that were described only as “bug fixes”: fixes to WIT parsing code that previously panicked or looped on malformed input (a potential denial-of-service or parser-confusion vector), and fixes to certificate validation in the warg protocol client (the protocol by which cargo-component fetches component dependencies from registries). The warg protocol is a new and evolving specification; its client implementation in cargo-component has received patches for what appear to be SSRF-class issues in registry URL handling, where a malicious registry configuration could redirect the client to internal network endpoints. None of these were filed as CVEs or advisories.

Monitoring for security-relevant changes requires watching the repository directly rather than waiting for advisories. The most effective signal is commit message filtering against the main branch. The command below queries commits to cargo-component and filters for security-relevant keywords:

Supplement this by watching changes to src/registry/ (registry client and TLS handling) and crates/wit-bindgen-* (WIT parser and code generator). Subscribe to the Bytecode Alliance security advisories list. The cargo-deny advisories database (https://github.com/EmbarkStudios/advisory-db) tracks crates-level advisories including those for wasm-tools and wit-bindgen; monitor it independently of the cargo-component repository.

Target systems: cargo-component 0.x, wasm-tools 1.x, Rust 1.75+, CI/CD pipelines building WASM components using cargo component build.

Threat Model

  1. Supply chain attacker compromising a transitive Rust crate. An attacker publishes a new version of a popular utility crate that cargo-component or a project built with it depends on. The new version adds a build.rs script that exfiltrates $CARGO_REGISTRY_TOKEN, $AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY, and other CI environment secrets to an attacker-controlled endpoint. Because Cargo resolves to the latest compatible semver by default and cargo-component’s own dependency tree is large, this attack surface is proportionally larger than for simpler tools. The malicious code runs during cargo component build with no indication to the developer.

  2. Malicious WIT interface dependency. A developer adds a WIT interface dependency from a public warg registry, a GitHub URL, or a community-published component package. The WIT definition contains a malformed or pathological interface specification — an extremely deep nesting of type aliases, a recursive type definition, or an overly long identifier. cargo-component’s WIT parser (backed by the wit-parser crate from wasm-tools) processes the definition during the build. A panic in the parser crashes the build. A stack overflow in the parser may be exploitable. A parser bug that accepts the malformed input and generates incorrect Rust bindings silently corrupts the build output. Unlike ordinary Rust crate dependencies, WIT dependencies have no comparable ecosystem-wide audit tooling.

  3. No-CVE-process attacker exploiting a silent security fix. An attacker monitors cargo-component commits specifically for patches to certificate validation or TLS handling in the warg client. Because the Bytecode Alliance does not maintain a CVE process for cargo-component, these patches are visible in the commit log before any advisory is published — and many are never accompanied by an advisory at all. The attacker identifies a certificate validation bypass, implements a MITM against HTTPS connections between a CI runner and a warg registry endpoint, and serves a malicious component package in place of the legitimate one. The CI runner installs the malicious component; subsequent WASM builds incorporate the attacker’s code.

  4. Cargo.lock drift introducing an unreviewed dependency version. A CI pipeline runs cargo component build without --locked or with a Cargo.lock that has been allowed to drift from the committed state. Between two build runs, a dependency used by the project is updated at crates.io. The new version contains malicious code added by a maintainer account that was compromised. Because --locked was not enforced, Cargo resolves to the new version, compiles and runs the malicious build.rs, and produces a build artifact indistinguishable from a clean one. The attack is detected only if the repository has cargo audit running in CI against the committed Cargo.lock — which in this scenario is not current.

Blast radius. All four scenarios result in code execution on the build host or CI runner. Depending on the CI configuration, this means access to secrets in environment variables (registry tokens, cloud credentials, signing keys), access to the source code repository, ability to modify build artifacts before signing or publication, and lateral movement to other jobs sharing the runner. A WASM component that is deployed at the edge or embedded in a production system carries attacker-controlled bytecode into production. The build host compromise may go undetected for weeks if the malicious code only exfiltrates environment state without causing visible build failures.

Configuration / Implementation

Pinning cargo-component itself

Install a specific version of cargo-component using --locked to prevent Cargo from upgrading its own dependencies during installation:

For reproducible CI, install cargo-component inside a pinned Docker image rather than downloading it at job runtime. This makes the tool version part of the container image digest:

Always pass --locked in CI. This forces Cargo to use the exact versions recorded in Cargo.lock and fails the build if the lock file is missing or inconsistent with Cargo.toml:

Commit Cargo.lock to the repository. For library crates, Cargo’s convention is not to commit Cargo.lock, but for components that are deployed artifacts the lock file is a security control and must be committed. Add an explicit check to CI to detect if the committed Cargo.lock has drifted from what Cargo.toml would resolve today:

WIT dependency pinning

In Cargo.toml, declare WIT interface dependencies with explicit version constraints rather than ranges. When using warg registries, pin to a specific version and review the WIT content before accepting an update:

After any WIT dependency update, audit the WIT content directly before running a build:

Review changes in WIT definitions the same way you review changes in source dependencies: look for type definitions that are unusually complex, recursively defined, or contain identifiers that are extremely long. The WIT parser processes these at build time.

cargo audit for known vulnerabilities

Run cargo audit against the committed Cargo.lock in CI. This checks all dependencies — including cargo-component’s own transitive dependencies if they appear in your lock file — against the RustSec advisory database:

Sandboxing the build environment

Run cargo component build in a network-isolated container. This prevents build.rs scripts from exfiltrating secrets or pulling in additional code at build time. Use --network=none for the actual build step:

The source tree is mounted read-only. The Cargo registry cache is pre-populated (the registry volume is mounted read-only, preventing any new downloads at build time). --network=none ensures no outbound connections. --read-only with a tmpfs /tmp prevents writes to the container filesystem except the explicit target mount. This configuration will cause legitimate build.rs scripts that attempt network access to fail — which is the intended behaviour for a sandboxed build.

For builds that genuinely require network access during setup (fetching WIT dependencies from a warg registry), separate the dependency resolution step from the compilation step. Run cargo component fetch or cargo fetch in a network-enabled step that writes to the Cargo registry cache, then mount that cache read-only for the network-isolated build:

Integrate Renovate or Dependabot for cargo-component version references in CI configuration files and Dockerfiles. When Renovate opens a PR to update the pinned cargo-component version, treat it as a security-review trigger: read the changelog, check the diff in src/registry/, and run the monitoring script against commits between the current and proposed versions before merging.
